About the Canada passport

Travel rights, validity, eligibility and the application process — everything you need to know.

Updated · May 2026

The Canadian passport, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) through Service Canada and Canadian embassies worldwide, is one of the most powerful travel documents in the world. It serves as proof of Canadian citizenship and identity, and is required for international travel and re-entry into Canada. Canadian passports are biometric e-passports that meet ICAO international standards, with embedded chips storing the holder's photograph, biographical data, and digital signature.

The Canadian passport ranks consistently in the global top 10, reflecting Canada's stable democracy, G7 membership, extensive bilateral agreements, and strong diplomatic relationships across every continent. Canadian citizens enjoy some of the broadest travel freedom in the world, with visa free access to virtually every major economy and tourist destination.

Types of Canadian Passports

  1. Regular Passport (blue cover): issued to Canadian citizens for personal and business travel. Available in either 5 year or 10 year validity at the holder's choice for adults aged 16 and above.

  2. Diplomatic Passport (red cover): issued to Canadian diplomats, members of the federal government, and senior officials on official duty.

  3. Special Passport (green cover): issued to government officials and accredited representatives travelling on official business.

  4. Emergency Travel Document: issued by Canadian embassies and consulates abroad to citizens who have lost their passport or need an immediate travel document, with limited validity tied to the purpose of travel.

  5. Certificate of Identity: issued to non Canadian citizens lawfully residing in Canada who cannot obtain a passport from their country of citizenship.

Validity of a Canadian Passport

A standard Canadian passport offers a choice of validity periods for adults aged 16 and above: either 5 years or 10 years. For children under 16, the validity is fixed at 5 years. Canadian passports can be renewed up to 12 months before expiry through any Service Canada location, by mail, or at any Canadian embassy or consulate abroad. Most destinations require the passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of departure.

What Does It Look Like?

The standard Canadian passport has a navy blue cover featuring the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada embossed in gold. The words "CANADA" and "PASSPORT / PASSEPORT" are printed in gold in both English and French, reflecting Canada's official bilingualism. The biometric chip symbol is displayed near the bottom of the cover, indicating compliance with ICAO standards. Inside, Canadian passports feature a polycarbonate data page, multiple anti tampering security elements, and artistic imagery reflecting Canadian landmarks, history, and natural heritage including Niagara Falls, the Rocky Mountains, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and scenes representing all ten provinces and three territories.

Inside the Passport

The identity page includes the following details:

  • Passport holder's photograph

  • Full legal name (Surname and Given names)

  • Passport number

  • Country Code (CAN)

  • Nationality (CANADIAN or CANADIENNE)

  • Date and place of birth

  • Sex

  • Date of issue and expiration

  • Issuing authority (Government of Canada)

  • Signature of the bearer

  • Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)

All Canadian passports issued since July 2013 contain an embedded biometric chip storing the holder's photograph, biographical data, and digital signature. Information appears in both English and French throughout the passport.

Visa Free Access with a Canadian Passport

As of 2026, Canadian passport holders can access 169 destinations without applying for a visa in advance. This includes 122 fully visa free entries and 47 visa on arrival destinations. Canadians enjoy visa free access to all Schengen Area countries, the United Kingdom, the United States (no advance authorisation required for land or sea entry from Canada), Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia (via ETA), New Zealand, and most of Latin America and the Caribbean. Visa on arrival is available in destinations like the Maldives, Nepal, Cambodia, Madagascar, and Jordan. Only 29 of the world's countries require Canadians to apply for an advance visa, including China (with conditional visa free transit options), Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Vietnam.

A notable recent change is Brazil, which began requiring Canadians to obtain a visa starting April 2025 (available online as an eVisa). This change reflects Brazil's reciprocity policy, as Canada requires visas from Brazilians.

Passport Strength and Ranking

According to the Atlys Passport Index 2026, the Canadian passport ranks 8th globally with a mobility score of 169. Canada has held a steady top 10 position for over a decade, helped by its G7 membership, Commonwealth ties, and reciprocal visa free agreements with most major economies. The Canadian passport ranks closely with Australia (also 8th) and the United States (9th), but trails the top tier of EU passports (Germany, France, Italy, Spain at 2nd or 3rd, score 174-175) and the UAE (1st, score 182). Canada's slight gap to top EU passports reflects the EU's freedom of movement advantage rather than any weakness in Canada's bilateral network.

The Canadian passport is one of the most valuable travel documents in the world, reflecting Canada's diplomatic reach, economic stability, and strong international standing. With access to 169 visa free or visa on arrival destinations, biometric security, and the unique flexibility of choosing between 5 year and 10 year validity, the Canadian passport continues to offer some of the broadest travel freedom available globally.
