Can I renew my US passport online?

Atlys is not the government’s online renewal system. The U.S. Department of State operates its own online renewal at travel.state.gov, available to some applicants; most renewals are still done by mail with form DS-82. What Atlys offers is help with the mail-in route: you answer questions on your phone, we prepare your complete DS-82 application pack for you to sign, and GenVisa, our registered courier partner, submits it.

The government offers online renewal for $130. Why pay Atlys?

If you qualify for it, the State Department’s online renewal at travel.state.gov is the cheapest route: you pay only the $130 government fee. It is limited, though — you must be 25 or older, renewing in the same name with no name change, able to wait 6 weeks or more, and not requesting expedited service. Atlys is worth it when one of those does not fit: you need it faster, your name has changed, you are under 25, or you would rather not risk a rejected application. Our fee covers the photo check, error review, courier submission and tracking.

Who qualifies to renew by mail with form DS-82?

You can renew by mail if you have your most recent passport, it is undamaged, it was issued when you were 16 or older, it was issued within the last 15 years, and it is in your current name (or you can legally document your name change). If any of those is not true you will need to apply in person with form DS-11 — choose “Fresh Passport” above and we will handle that route instead.

How long does a passport renewal take?

The U.S. Department of State publishes typical times of 4–6 weeks for routine service and 2–3 weeks for expedited service, not including mailing time. These times are set by the government, change throughout the year, and cannot be guaranteed by Atlys or anyone else.

How much does it cost to renew a US passport?

The government fee is paid to the U.S. Department of State. Atlys charges a separate service fee for preparing your application, checking your photo, and tracking it. The full breakdown for each route is shown under “Select your service” above.

What is the difference between the government fee and the Atlys service fee?

Accepted Answer

The government fee goes to the U.S. Department of State and is required for every renewal, whoever helps you. The Atlys service fee pays for our preparation, photo compliance check, error review, and status tracking. You would pay the government fee even if you applied entirely on your own.

Do I have to send in my old passport?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A DS-82 mail-in renewal requires you to submit your most recent passport with the application. The State Department returns it to you, usually separately from your new passport.

Can I renew if my passport is already expired?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as it was issued within the last 15 years and you meet the other DS-82 conditions. If it was issued more than 15 years ago, you’ll need to apply in person with form DS-11.

Can I renew if my name has changed?

Yes — include a certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order documenting the change. If you can’t document the change, you’ll need to apply in person with form DS-11.

What photo do I need for a passport renewal?

One color 2x2 inch photo taken within the last 6 months, on a white or off-white background, with a neutral expression and no glasses. With Atlys you take the photo on your phone and we check it against State Department requirements before you submit anything.

What happens if my renewal is rejected or delayed?

Most rejections come from avoidable errors — bad photos, incorrect fees, or incomplete forms. Atlys reviews your application before you send it to minimize that risk, and if the State Department requests more information, our support team helps you respond.

Yes. Once your application is in the system, Atlys tracks its status and sends you proactive updates, so you don’t have to keep checking the government status page.

GenVisa LLC, operating as Generations Visa Service, is a passport courier company registered with the U.S. Department of State. Atlys prepares and securely transmits your application; GenVisa submits it and collects your new passport. Atlys is a technology and support partner, not a registered passport expeditor.

No. Atlys is a private company and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of State or any government agency. You can always apply directly at travel.state.gov and pay only the government fee. Atlys charges a service fee for preparation, review, and tracking assistance.
